The detail
A UV canopy mounts UV-C lamps in the plenum behind the filters. The light drives two reactions: photolysis, where the ultraviolet splits grease molecules directly, and ozonolysis, where the lamps generate ozone that oxidises grease and odour into simpler substances such as carbon dioxide and water vapour. The effect is real - a well-run UV system markedly reduces grease reaching the ductwork and can extend duct cleaning intervals.
But UV only works behind effective grease filtration. If the primary filters are not doing their job, grease coats the lamps themselves, and a coated lamp stops emitting the UV that makes the whole system work. So a UV canopy does not reduce filter cleaning - if anything it makes it more critical, because the filters now protect an expensive lamp array as well as the duct behind it.
The lamps and their safety systems become maintenance items in their own right. Lamps age and lose output, guards and sleeves grease up, and the whole array needs periodic cleaning and lamp renewal to keep working. Crucially, UV systems are interlocked with the airflow - they shut down if the fan stops or the filters are removed, and if those interlocks fail the system is both ineffective and a safety concern, because UV-C and ozone are hazardous.
And UV does not exempt the system from TR19 Grease. It reduces grease reaching the duct but does not eliminate it, so the ductwork, fan and discharge still accumulate grease over time and still need cleaning and verification to the same 200 and 50-micron measures. UV changes how often the duct needs attention; it does not remove the duct from scope.
What it means for you
The practical shift with UV is that maintenance moves rather than disappears. There is now a lamp array to service, interlocks to prove, and ozone and UV safety to respect, on top of the filter care that becomes more important, not less. A UV canopy maintained as if it were self-cleaning quietly degrades - lamps coated, output falling, and grease creeping back into the duct.
It also needs people who understand the technology. Servicing a UV canopy means isolating the lamps safely, cleaning or renewing them, checking the interlocks and guards, and verifying the grease filtration that protects them - not just wiping the hood. Treated as an ordinary canopy, the very features that justify the investment stop working.
Used well, UV is a genuine benefit: less grease in the duct, longer intervals between duct cleans, and reduced odour at the discharge. But those benefits are earned through proper maintenance of the lamps, filters and interlocks, and they sit on top of - not instead of - the TR19 Grease cleaning the duct and fan still require.
