The Link Between Ventilation and Fire Compartmentation

A building is divided into fire compartments so that a fire starting in one part is held there long enough for people to escape and for the brigade to respond. Walls and floors do that work, but ventilation ductwork punches straight through them, threading a continuous metal path from room to room. Where a duct crosses a compartment line, something has to close that gap when a fire starts. That something is a fire damper, and it is where ventilation and fire safety meet.

Ducts breach the very walls that protect you

Fire compartmentation depends on the integrity of fire-rated walls and floors. Every opening through one of those barriers is a potential route for flame and smoke, and ventilation systems create a great many such openings by design, because air has to move between spaces. Left unprotected, a duct that passes through a fire wall simply carries fire past it, undoing the compartmentation and letting a contained fire spread through the building's own air paths. This is the problem fire dampers exist to solve, and it is why they sit at the intersection of two disciplines that are often managed separately.

How a fire damper works

Held open, sprung shut

A fire damper is a mechanical barrier fitted into ductwork wherever it penetrates a fire-rated wall or floor. In normal operation it stays open and air passes through it as usual. It is typically held open by a fusible link, a small heat-sensitive element that melts at a set temperature, commonly around 72 degrees Celsius. When a fire raises the temperature at the damper, the link releases and the blades or curtain drop shut, sealing the opening and restoring the integrity of the compartment barrier. Motorised versions can also be driven closed by the fire alarm to control smoke as well as heat. Either way, the aim is the same: when fire arrives, the hole in the wall closes.

Because these are life-safety devices hidden inside ductwork, they have to be proven to work rather than assumed to. The recognised route is a drop test, in which a competent person accesses the damper, releases the fusible link or actuator, confirms the damper closes fully and freely, then resets it and replaces the link. Each damper is logged with its location, condition and result. A damper that is painted over, jammed with debris, fitted with the wrong link or blocked by a later building alteration will fail silently in a real fire, which is exactly the outcome the testing exists to prevent.

The frequency is set by standards and law together. BS 9999, the code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings, calls for fire dampers to be tested at least once every twelve months; a notable change from the older guidance is that all dampers now fall under annual testing, where previously some types were tested only every two years. Dampers in dust-laden or high-risk settings such as commercial kitchen extract are tested more frequently, often every six months, and newly installed dampers are tested within a year of fitting and after any alteration that could affect them.

Whose duty it is

A legal responsibility, not just good practice

Testing fire dampers is not optional. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for a building must keep its fire-safety provisions in efficient working order, and that expressly includes fire dampers. Approved Document B addresses how ductwork must be treated where it passes through compartments, and BESA's DW145 guide to good practice covers the installation and maintenance of the dampers themselves. Failing to test can bring enforcement action, invalidate building insurance and, in the worst case, cost lives. Damper testing and duct cleaning are distinct

It is worth being clear that fire-damper drop testing and ventilation-hygiene cleaning are separate duties, even though they touch the same ductwork. One proves that a life-safety device will close in a fire; the other keeps the internal surfaces clean so the system does not spread contamination or, in a kitchen, accumulate grease. A good programme handles both, and shares one crucial requirement: access. Dampers and duct runs alike have to be reachable through properly placed access panels, and the same neglect that lets grease build up in a kitchen extract, addressed by a proper canopy cleaning fire risk assessment, can also leave a fire damper seized shut and useless. Treat the ductwork as both an air path and a fire path, and the two jobs stop competing for attention.
