Grain and agricultural work generates a complex dust that is a respiratory sensitiser and is linked to farmer's lung, occupational asthma and long-term lung disease. It is also generated in some of the hardest settings to control - open barns, intake pits and mobile plant - which makes fixed local exhaust ventilation at the key handling points all the more valuable. What is in the dust, and what it does

Grain dust has a workplace exposure limit of 10 milligrams per cubic metre as an eight-hour average, but because it is a respiratory sensitiser the duty is to keep exposure as low as reasonably practicable below that, not simply under the number. It is linked to occupational asthma, chronic bronchitis and COPD, to extrinsic allergic alveolitis such as farmer's lung, and to grain fever. Agriculture's occupational asthma rate is around double the national average.

The dust is more than the grain itself. It carries fungal spores, bacteria, endotoxins, mites and animal dander, which is part of why it provokes such a range of respiratory illness. It is produced wherever grain is moved and disturbed - intake pits, augers and conveyors, dressing and cleaning, drying, milling and bagging - and in quantity it also brings a dust-explosion risk that shapes how plant is designed and extracted.

What the test has to confirm

Where local exhaust ventilation serves fixed handling points - intake, cleaning, drying and bagging plant - a thorough examination and test confirms it is capturing the dust at source and moving air at the commissioned rate, at least every fourteen months with user checks between. That fixed plant is where source capture is realistic and worthwhile, and where the test can meaningfully prove performance.

The harder settings - open barns and mobile equipment - rely more on enclosure, good working practice and respiratory protection, but that does not excuse the fixed extraction from being tested. Proving the plant still captures the dust, rather than assuming it does because it once did, is what protects a workforce whose lungs are already carrying a heavy dust load. Seasonal peaks matter here too, since harvest and intake concentrate the dustiest work into short, intense periods when the extraction is worked hardest and any shortfall shows.
