The volume problem

Either way the lint load is relentless, and it collects not just in the filter but along the duct walls, at every bend and around the fan.

The emollient hazard
Care homes launder a great deal of fabric carrying emollient and barrier creams - the skin products residents use daily transfer onto bedding, clothing and towels. Like massage oils in a spa, these emollients can undergo an exothermic self-heating reaction after a hot drying cycle. The heat has nowhere to go when items are folded or packed into a trolley, and they can spontaneously combust well after leaving the machine. Fire services have flagged this specific route for care settings.
The controls are procedural: process emollient-contaminated laundry the same day, run the full cool-down, wash hot with an emulsifier where appropriate, and unload promptly rather than leaving hot loads sitting. Empty lint filters every cycle and keep the duct itself clear so heat is never trapped in the first place.
Why the setting raises the stakes
What makes a care home different is the consequence. Many residents have reduced mobility and depend on staff to move them, so evacuation is slow and demanding - which is why historic care and nursing home fires have been so serious and why sprinkler protection is now central to the sector's fire strategy. A laundry fire that would be contained elsewhere is a life-safety event here. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 the responsible person must assess and control that risk, and the fire risk assessment should treat the laundry and its ductwork as a named hazard, not an afterthought. Keeping the lint down and the duct clear is the simplest way to stop the ignition ever occurring.
