When several people in the same area report headaches, dizziness or a fog that lifts at the weekend, the cause is often airborne and the control that should have removed it is the extraction. Symptoms are a late signal, but a real one.
The short answer
Headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, a heavy head or irritated eyes and throat are the classic acute effects of breathing solvent and process vapours. The tell is timing: if the symptoms build through a shift and ease on days off or holidays, the cause is very likely something in the workplace air, and the system meant to remove it, the local exhaust ventilation, is the first thing to question.
The detail
Most organic solvents act on the central nervous system as depressants. Breathe them at low to moderate concentrations and you get headache, light-headedness, nausea and drowsiness; at high concentrations the effects run through to loss of consciousness. When extraction captures vapour at source, concentrations in the breathing zone stay low. When a hood is mispositioned, a fan has weakened or a duct leaks, vapour escapes into the room, concentrations rise, and people start to feel it. The symptom is the body registering a dose the extraction should have prevented.
Not every airborne illness is acute or reversible. Respiratory sensitisers such as isocyanates, the most commonly cited cause of occupational asthma in Great Britain, followed by flour, work differently. They quietly sensitise the immune system over weeks or months, and once someone is sensitised even tiny amounts can trigger an attack, often hours later in the evening. By then the damage may be permanent and the worker may have to leave the trade. That is why symptoms are a late signal: with sensitisers, the harm is often done before anyone feels a thing.
What it means for you
Take clustered symptoms seriously and treat them as a control question, not just a welfare one. The first step is to have the extraction examined against its design, because a failing hood or a weakened fan is a common and fixable cause of a rising vapour concentration. Where doubt remains about the actual dose, COSHH Regulation 10 exposure monitoring puts a measured number on what workers breathe, and Regulation 11 health surveillance applies where a listed substance and a valid detection technique exist.
It is worth remembering that a thorough examination and air sampling answer different questions. The examination asks whether the kit performs as designed; sampling asks whether exposure is below the workplace exposure limit. A system can pass its examination and still overexpose people if it was underdesigned or the work has changed, so where staff are unwell despite a recent test, sampling is the check that settles it. Either way, the symptoms are the prompt to measure, not to wait.
