The detail
An Ansul R-102 detects heat through fusible links strung along a cable above the cookline. When a link melts, the cable slackens and a spring in the control head fires the agent. The whole detection run - links, cable, corners turned on pulleys inside a thin conduit - is mounted exactly where the greasiest air collects, directly over the appliances.
A film of grease on a link insulates it. The link is calibrated to part at a set temperature, but under a coat of baked-on fat it needs more heat and more time, so the release that should be near-instant is delayed. The calibration the system depends on is quietly shifted by the deposit.
More dangerous is the cable itself. Grease and carbon work into the conduit and onto the pulleys, and a gummed cable may not slacken even after a link has melted. Suppression manufacturers have patented mechanisms specifically to counter this failure - a documented case where the link releases but the agent never fires because the cable cannot move.
At the delivery end, nozzles carry small blow-off caps that keep grease out of the tip. Those caps and the nozzle alignment sit in the same fouled air; when grease bridges a cap or knocks the aim, the spray pattern engineered to blanket each appliance lands wide or short.
What it means for you
A six-monthly suppression service checks and re-sets these parts, but it cannot hold back the grease that accumulates between visits. If the canopy runs dirty, the detection line is degrading the day after the engineer leaves.
Regular extraction cleaning keeps the environment the suppression system lives in within tolerance. Degreasing the canopy, the plenum around the detection run and the appliances below reduces the film that insulates links and gums cables in the first place.
The two disciplines are complementary. Your BAFE SP206 engineer certifies the device; the TR19 clean keeps its surroundings from defeating it. Run them together and the Ansul system has a real chance of firing on time, on target, every time.

In the worst case, yes. If grease and carbon gum the detection cable or its pulleys, the cable may not slacken even after a fusible link melts, so the control head never releases the agent. It is a documented failure mode.
No. The SP206 service inspects and resets the suppression parts; it is not a duct hygiene clean. Grease removal from the canopy, plenum and duct is a separate TR19 job that keeps the suppression environment in tolerance.
