Why Are Pests Returning Despite Treatment?

If cockroaches or rodents keep coming back within weeks of a treatment, the problem is rarely the treatment - it is the food source and shelter left behind. Here is why pest control and deep cleaning only work as a pair.

If a pest contractor treats your kitchen and the same cockroaches or rodents are back within a few weeks, the treatment is usually not the thing that failed - the conditions that drew them in are still there.

It is one of the most frustrating things a catering business faces. You pay for a call-out, the technician sprays, baits and proofs, the activity drops for a fortnight, and then it creeps back. Managers understandably start to question the contractor. In most cases, though, the treatment did exactly what it was meant to do. What it cannot do on its own is remove the warm, greasy, food-rich harbourage that keeps drawing new pests in and lets survivors breed back to full strength.

German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) are the clearest example. A single female and her offspring can produce hundreds of new roaches in a matter of months, and they shelter in exactly the warm cavities a busy kitchen provides - behind the range, under the fryer, inside motor housings and along grouted floor joints thick with grease. Kill the visible population and leave the harbourage, and you have simply reset the clock. They also spread bacteria including salmonella and campylobacter, which is why evidence of them triggers immediate action from an Environmental Health Officer.

So the real question is not "which treatment works" but how treatment and cleaning fit together. Below we set out what reactive pest treatment does well and where it falls short, then the same for a scheduled deep clean that strips out the harbourage. The honest answer is that neither one is a complete programme on its own.

Option A: reactive pest treatment on its own

This is the standard response - a contractor attends, identifies the species, and knocks the population down with gel baits, insecticidal treatments, rodenticide, traps and physical proofing of entry points. It is a necessary part of any programme and, for an active infestation, it is the fastest way to reduce numbers and get you back to a defensible position.

Pros

  • Fast knock-down of a live infestation, which matters when you are days away from an inspection or a closure risk.
  • Species identification and a targeted method - baiting a roach colony is very different from proofing against rodents.
  • Documented visits and a logbook, which an EHO expects to see as evidence of a managed pest control programme under food hygiene law.
  • Physical proofing seals the gaps, drain covers and door gaps that let pests in from outside or from neighbouring units.

Cons

  • It treats the symptom, not the cause. If grease, food debris and standing water remain, the site stays attractive and re-infestation is a matter of when, not if.
  • Bait and spray struggle to reach the harbourage that matters - the sealed cavity behind a fixed appliance, or the grease trapped under floor-standing equipment that is rarely pulled out.
  • Repeat call-outs mount up. Paying for treatment every few weeks to hold a line is far more expensive over a year than removing the food source once and maintaining it.
  • On its own it does little for your Food Hygiene Rating. Inspectors judge cleanliness and pest control together, and visible grease harbourage counts against you even if no live pest is seen on the day.

Option B: a deep clean that removes the harbourage

A scheduled deep clean does what a routine wipe-down cannot. Equipment is moved out, heat sources are worked behind and beneath, floor gullies and drainage are flushed, and the layers of carbonised grease that collect on wall cladding, grout lines and appliance housings are stripped back to clean surfaces. In pest terms, you are removing the food and the shelter at the same time. It is the part of the programme that pest contractors cannot deliver, and the part that decides whether treatment holds.

Pros

  • Removes the root cause - the grease, food residue and stagnant water that pests feed on and breed in. No food source, no sustained colony.
  • Opens up the hidden harbourage. Pulling out and cleaning behind the fryer, range and cold units exposes the cavities where roaches actually shelter, so any follow-up treatment lands where it counts.
  • Directly supports your Food Hygiene Rating and your defence under the Food Safety Act 1990 and Regulation (EC) 852/2004, which require adequate procedures to control pests and surfaces kept genuinely clean.
  • Cuts grease loading on extraction and drainage at the same time, reducing fire risk and the drain odours and moisture that draw flies and roaches. Cons

  • On its own it will not clear an established, breeding infestation quickly - you still need targeted treatment to kill the live population that is already present.
  • It needs to be scheduled and repeated. A single deep clean helps, but grease rebuilds, so frequency has to match your volume to stay effective.
  • It requires downtime and access - equipment moved, services isolated, surfaces left to dry - so it takes planning around service.
  • Done badly, a "deep clean" that skips behind fixed equipment misses the very harbourage that matters, which is why access and thoroughness are worth checking before you book.

The two work as one programme

Put simply, treatment resets the population and cleaning removes the reason it was there. Run either alone and pests return; run them together, in the right order, and you break the cycle. The practical pattern is to time a thorough deep clean alongside or just before treatment, so the contractor is baiting a site that is no longer feeding the colony, then keep the deep clean on a schedule that matches how hard the kitchen works.
