In 2024/25, food and drink premises recorded around 1,275 fires - close to a fifth of all UK workplace fires, and second only to heavy industry among non-domestic premises. The reasons are consistent: cooking equipment run hot for long hours, fats and oils with low flash points, grease accumulating in extraction systems, and staff whose attention is on service rather than hazard-watching.
