A message, not a mystery

You degrease a shelf edge or a stretch of wall, and by the next service it is tacky again. It is tempting to read that as a cleaning failure - the wrong product, not enough elbow grease. It is neither. A film that returns that quickly is telling you something specific about where the grease is coming from and why the surface cannot be the answer.

What the film actually is

Grease that arrives by air

Cooking throws a fine grease mist into the air, and it settles on every cool surface in range - walls, shelf edges, light fittings, the tops of units. That is what the tackiness is: a thin, even layer deposited from the air, not something spilled or splashed. Because it is being laid down continuously while the kitchen runs, wiping it off simply resets a clock that starts again with the next service. The surface was never the source.

Which is why the same spots turn sticky first, again and again. The pattern is consistent, and that consistency is itself diagnostic.

What a fast return tells you

The extract isn't keeping up

How quickly the film comes back is a reading in itself. A slow return is normal maintenance. A fast one - tacky within a day - says more grease is escaping into the room than the extract is capturing, which points to filters and a canopy overdue for cleaning, or a fan and duct so loaded that airflow has dropped. The film on your wall is, in effect, the grease your extraction system is no longer pulling away.

Treating the cause

Clean the surface, fix the supply

Clearing the film matters for hygiene, but on its own it only ever buys a day. The lasting change is to cut the supply: clean the extract so it captures the mist again, and deep clean the loaded surfaces back to bare so the next layer starts from zero.

So wiping the film is necessary but not sufficient. A film that returns fast is telling you the extract or the deeper grease load is the real source - and it keeps coming back until that source, not the surface, is cleaned.

Why do my surfaces get sticky again so quickly after cleaning?

Does a fast-returning film mean my extract is failing?
