A tumble dryer vent does not fail without notice. Long before lint restricts the exhaust enough to ignite, the same restriction shows up as slower drying, a hotter machine and room, a burning smell and weak airflow at the outlet. Each of those is a symptom of the same underlying problem - a duct that is choking - and reading them early is the difference between a routine clean and a fire.
The signs to watch
The earliest and most reliable sign is that loads take longer to dry. When lint restricts the exhaust, the dryer cannot carry moisture away efficiently, so cycles stretch and clothes come out damp or still warm. Close behind it are heat signs: the machine and the laundry room run hotter than they should, because the heat that cannot escape along the duct stays in the space. A burning or musty smell during a cycle means lint is heating up near the element, and it should never be ignored.
Look at the airflow, too. Weak or no airflow at the external termination, an outlet flap that barely moves, and lint visibly gathering around the vent or behind the dryer all point to a duct that is loading up. If the machine's thermal cut-out starts tripping - the dryer stopping mid-cycle and needing to cool before it will run again - the restriction is already serious.
Why the signs matter so much
These are not separate faults to weigh up individually - they are one problem at different stages. The restriction that slows drying is the same restriction that drives operating temperatures up toward the point where packed lint can ignite at the heating element. That is why slow drying is not a minor annoyance to live with: it is the first visible step on the path to a fire, and every further sign means the duct is closer to it.
Because lint accumulation compounds - a partly blocked duct slows the air, and slower air drops more lint - the signs tend to appear gradually and then worsen quickly. By the time the heat and smell are obvious, the restriction is well advanced. Acting on the first sign, the slow drying, is far safer and cheaper than waiting for the rest.
What to do about it
If you are seeing any of these signs, emptying the lint filter is not the answer - the filter is not where the restriction lives. The build-up that matters is along the duct, at the bends and at the termination, out of sight. The fix is to inspect the whole exhaust run and clear it to atmosphere, restoring airflow so cycles return to normal and the fire risk drops. If several signs are present at once, treat it as urgent and stop relying on the machine until the vent has been checked. Once cleared, set an inspection interval based on how hard the dryer works, so the signs never get the chance to build again.
