The detail
The vapour comes from the methacrylates in the products - nail systems generally use ethyl methacrylate, since the more volatile methyl methacrylate is restricted in nail products - while filing and e-file drilling generate fine acrylic and gel dust. The most commonly documented harm is allergic contact dermatitis, alongside irritation of the eyes, nose and airways and the possibility of occupational asthma where someone becomes sensitised.
Sensitisation is what makes this more than a comfort issue. Once a person reacts to a methacrylate, even small future exposures can trigger symptoms, which can end a career in the trade. That is why the aim is to keep everyday exposure low rather than merely tolerable - and why a fan that stirs the air, or a filter that returns it to the room, does not meet the need. Effective control captures vapour and dust at the nail and takes it away.

COSHH applies to a salon just as it does to a factory: if work produces substances hazardous to health that people breathe, exposure has to be controlled, whatever the size of the business.
