We are out under Slough's extraction every week. The proof that matters is the jobs, not a stock photo.

A data-centre battery-backup facility in Slough had the hydrogen-gas extraction canopy over its charging racks running dead - the secondary inline spark-proof fan had seized on a failed motor bearing. We confirmed the complete loss of static pressure and did a mechanical check on the fan housing. It failed outright: zero airflow, which lets hazardous hydrogen build up during charge cycles. The whole job was done in an absolute silence zone to protect the sensitive telecom kit nearby.

The duty

Fourteen months, and whose name is on it

COSHH Regulation 9 makes it plain: any LEV controlling exposure to a hazardous substance has to be thoroughly examined and tested at intervals no greater than fourteen months, and the resulting records kept for at least five years.

How often does LEV need testing in Slough?

Under COSHH Regulation 9, most local exhaust ventilation needs a thorough examination and test at least every 14 months, with higher-risk processes more often. Is LEV testing the same as TR19 grease cleaning?

No. LEV testing is a statutory examination of fume and dust control to COSHH and HSG258, with capture and face-velocity readings; TR19 is kitchen grease and fire risk. We do both across Slough, but a Slough Trading Estate fabrication shop and a Farnham Road canopy are kept as the separate jobs they are.

Can you test around our shifts?

Yes. We plan testing around production shifts at the Slough Trading Estate units, term-time access at the Slough university labs, and normal hours at smaller workshops, so the examination never stops the line.
