Neston

Coal was mined at Ness and Little Neston from 1759, the Ness Colliery working seams that ran out under the Dee Estuary itself and floating boats of coal along canals cut deep underground. A second phase opened in 1875 as Neston Colliery, later Wirral Colliery, served by a branch off the Parkgate railway until competition from bigger pits closed it in 1927.
