How Ventilation Affects Health, Comfort and Productivity

Ventilation is usually treated as plumbing for air: a background service that either works or does not. But the volume of fresh air moving through a space has a direct, measurable effect on how people feel and how well they think. Get it right and a building is comfortable and alert; get it wrong and the same building becomes tiring, stuffy and quietly less productive.

More than just fresh-smelling air

At its simplest, ventilation replaces stale indoor air, warm, humid and loaded with the carbon dioxide and odours that people generate, with fresh air from outside. That exchange does three jobs at once: it protects health by diluting pollutants and airborne contaminants, it supports comfort by managing temperature, humidity and smell, and it sustains concentration by keeping carbon dioxide low enough for the brain to work well.
