How often fire dampers should be tested, and why

A fire damper spends years doing nothing, then has one job: to slam shut and seal a duct the instant a fire reaches it. Testing is how you find out, in advance, whether it still can.

A fire damper is a passive guardian. Built into ductwork where it crosses a fire-rated wall or floor, it sits open and invisible through years of normal airflow, then, when heat reaches it, a thermal element releases and spring-loaded blades snap shut to seal the opening and stop fire and smoke travelling the duct into the next compartment. The catch is simple: the only way to know it will still do that is to test it, and how often you test depends on where it lives.

UK guidance is consistent on the starting point. BS 9999, the code of practice for fire safety in the design, management and use of buildings, sets out that fire dampers should be tested by a competent person on installation and thereafter at regular intervals not exceeding one year, and repaired or replaced immediately if found faulty. Spring-operated dampers in particular should be tested every twelve months. The duty behind this sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which requires the responsible person to keep fire safety provisions, dampers included, in efficient working order, and the test records are routinely requested by fire risk assessors, insurers and enforcing authorities.

Annual is only the baseline, and the same guidance is explicit that dampers in dust-laden or polluted atmospheres should be tested much more frequently, at intervals suited to the degree of contamination. In practice that means a damper in a clean office ceiling might reasonably run on a twelve-month cycle, while a damper exposed to the grease and dust of a commercial kitchen environment is widely inspected every six months. The reason is mechanical and unforgiving: the very contamination that a busy kitchen produces is what stops a damper closing. Blades jammed with grease, dust and debris, corroded or broken springs, and seized mechanisms are among the most common faults found on inspection.

A drop test is how those faults are exposed before a fire does it for you. For a spring or fusible-link damper, the tester manually releases the link to confirm the blades or curtain fall fully closed under gravity or spring force, without obstruction, then resets the unit and fits a new fusible link where needed. For a motorised damper, the actuator is driven through a full close and open, with end-switch feedback checked and its interface with the fire alarm confirmed. Each damper is logged with its location, type, condition and result, and any remedial work recorded, because a damper found faulty must be fixed, not simply noted.

There is also the problem of access, which is where many testing programmes quietly fail. A damper hidden above a sealed ceiling with no access panel cannot be tested at all, and an untested damper is an unknown one. You cannot maintain what you cannot reach, and you cannot prove what you never checked.
