Every breath your staff take at work has, in most modern buildings, passed through ductwork on its way to them. The ducts are hidden above ceilings and behind walls, out of sight and largely out of mind, yet they are the last thing the air touches before it reaches people's lungs. What is inside those ducts, therefore, matters far more than their invisibility suggests.
A mechanical ventilation system is a network of metal ducts moving air around a building, and the internal surface area of that network is surprisingly large, often estimated at around a tenth of the floor space it serves. Air is drawn in, conditioned, pushed along the supply ducts and delivered through diffusers into the rooms where people work. Because the supply duct is the final stretch before the breathing zone, anything living on its internal surfaces, dust, debris, microbial growth, is in direct contact with the air that occupants will inhale moments later. Clean ductwork is not a cosmetic nicety; it is the difference between a system that delivers clean air and one that delivers whatever has settled inside it.
What builds up inside
Ductwork accumulates contamination in two directions. It collects dust, dead skin, fibres and general debris carried in the airstream, and it can develop microbial growth wherever moisture is present, near cooling coils, condensate trays or damp filters. Over months and years this builds into a measurable layer on the internal surfaces. The consequences are twofold. First, the deposits themselves become a reservoir: every time air rushes past, fine particles and, in the worst cases, microbial spores are picked up and carried into the occupied space. Second, the build-up physically narrows the duct and loads the filters, so the system moves less fresh air even as it works harder, which is the quiet mechanism behind many a stuffy, under-ventilated office.
The industry treats this seriously enough to measure it. The recognised UK specification for internal cleanliness of general ventilation systems, TR19 Air, published by BESA and aligned with the European standard BS EN 15780, sets out how ductwork should be inspected, tested and cleaned, and defines measurable cleanliness levels by building risk category. For medium-risk buildings such as offices, schools and restaurants, guidance places the acceptable surface dust level below a defined threshold, and cleanliness is verified by objective methods such as the deposit thickness test rather than a visual glance. This is the same framework that separates general ventilation hygiene from the distinct fire-risk regime that governs greasy kitchen extract ductwork.
It is worth being clear that this is a health and air-quality question, not only an efficiency one. Employers already carry a duty under the Workplace regulations to provide enough fresh or purified air, and a ventilation system distributing its own accumulated dust is quietly working against that duty. The ducts are part of the air-quality system whether anyone thinks about them or not, and their condition sets a ceiling on how good the delivered air can be.
Why it reaches the workforce
The reason duct condition matters so directly is that there is nothing between the supply duct and the person but a diffuser. Whatever the air collects on its final pass is delivered straight into the room, which is why dirty ductwork shows up as exactly the symptoms people notice: stale air, more dust on surfaces, and the tiredness and irritation associated with poor air quality. It is the physical link behind the broader point that indoor air quality matters commercially, because the air people breathe shapes how they feel and perform. The duct is where good intentions about clean air either survive or quietly fail.
