Of all the things that move a duct cleaning price, two do most of the work: how far the ductwork runs, and how easily it can be reached. Get these right in the quote and the figure holds; guess at them and it grows.
The short answer
If you want to understand why two kitchens of a similar size get very different quotes, look at two things: how far the ductwork runs, and how hard it is to reach. Cleaning time tracks length and complexity; effort and equipment track access. A short, straight, low-level run is quick and cheap to clean well; a long run full of bends that climbs a riser to a roof fan is a much bigger job - and an honest quote prices that difference.
Why length is not just distance
Length matters because every metre of ductwork has to be physically cleaned and inspected, not merely passed through. But it is not only about distance. Bends and transitions are where grease drops out of the airflow and collects, so a run with many changes of direction carries more deposit and takes longer to bring to standard than a straight one of the same length. Hidden sections - ductwork tucked above ceilings or behind panels - add time simply because reaching and working in them is slower.
This is also why grease is measured at set points along the run rather than in one place: behind the filters, a metre from the canopy, three metres along, and midway through. A longer, more convoluted system has more of these points to test and clean, which is part of why the quote climbs with complexity rather than raw length alone.
Why access can swing the price hardest
Access is frequently the biggest single swing in a quote. Ductwork concealed above false ceilings, in roof voids or up external walls takes time and equipment to get to before any cleaning starts. Height turns a straightforward clean into a working-at-height job with the right access equipment for risers and roof-mounted fans. And if the system has too few access panels, the ductwork simply cannot be cleaned to bare metal until provision is made - so a quote has to account for that, or it is not quoting a compliant clean.
None of this is visible from a phone call, which is exactly why a quote given without a survey tends to be wrong. It either lowballs the access and grows once work exposes the reality, or pads it defensively. A survey walks the run, sees the reach, notes the panels and prices what is actually there.
What this means for reading your quote
When you get a quote, ask that it names the run and the access it assumes: the extent of ductwork covered, whether risers and roof plant are included, and whether existing panel provision is enough or extra access is needed. A quote that spells these out is one you can trust and compare; a bare figure with no reference to layout is a guess waiting to change. The length and the reach are the story of the price - a good quote tells it plainly.
