Hindley

Grease and dry ductwork run under the whole city

Hindley rates hundreds of food premises, and behind a large share sits an extract duct a canopy clean never reaches - plus the dry ductwork and air-handling that keep its offices and public buildings running.

The city's kitchens sit in tight, mixed stock - Ladies Lane, Castle Hill Road, Hindley Green - with long concealed duct runs up to roof fans. We clean the full run to the TR19 Grease standard, canopy to fan, including the horizontal and vertical sections a canopy-only clean leaves coated.

Kitchens are only half the work - we also strip the dry supply and extract ductwork of Hindley schools, offices and civic buildings, and the lint-choked dryer runs behind its hotels and care homes. It is the hardest-pressed kitchens - takeaways, pub and club kitchens, care-home and prison catering blocks and the school kitchens - that glaze their hidden ducting quickest, and that coating is the road a fire takes.

The standard

TR19 Grease, and the parts a Hindley canopy clean misses

TR19 Grease is the benchmark Hindley insurers and fire risk assessors expect - measured across the whole extract run, not just the visible mouth of the canopy.

The standard works in grease-film thickness, fixing the depth at which a run must be cleaned and re-tested. In the shared roof voids around Ladies Lane and Hindley Green, wiping the canopy and filters leaves the ductwork - the long concealed sections that gather grease and carry fire - untouched. We open the full Hindley run through existing and newly cut inspection hatches, strip it to bare metal, log grease-depth readings at fixed points before and after, and issue a TR19 Grease certificate with the post-clean depths recorded.

By system

Three kinds of ductwork, three kinds of risk

Kitchen grease ductwork

The fire risk. Fried-food extract coats duct walls in combustible grease; cleaned canopy to fan and certified to TR19 Grease.

Dry ductwork

Supply and general extract in offices and public buildings, carrying dust and debris that throttles airflow and loads the air-handling unit; cleaned to TR19.

Laundry ductwork

The hidden one. Tumble-dryer ducting packs with lint - highly combustible - in Hindley hotels, care homes and gyms.

On the ground in Hindley

Work we have done across the city

We are in Hindley's ductwork and plant every week. The proof is the jobs, not the stock photos.

The community centre hall in Hindley had branch supply ducts furred with dust and debris, and staff had been grumbling about stuffy, still air. We put the main supply runs under HEPA negative pressure, power-brushed them through and cleared out the fan coil unit. Air movement picked up noticeably across the rooms and we tidied everything away afterwards. The site manager was pleased enough to book a standing quarterly visit while we were still loading the van.

When it is due

Signs a Hindley system is overdue

Ductwork rarely warns you politely. In a busy Hindley kitchen these are the tells.

Watch for steam that hangs in the room, cooking smells creeping back over the tables, a canopy weeping onto a Ladies Lane line, grease crusting at the filter rims, or a Hindley insurer or fire assessor calling for a TR19 certificate you do not hold. How often it needs doing rides on the cooking load - a hard-frying Castle Hill Road kitchen far more than a quiet daytime cafe - and the certificate fixes that interval, so the next clean is planned, not chanced.

How it runs

Survey, access, clean, certify

1

Survey

Inspect the full Hindley run, find the access gaps in the concealed sections, agree scope and frequency.

2

Access

Fit inspection hatches where the run is sealed - common in the older Hindley Green conversions - and protect the kitchen.

3

Clean

Canopy to roof fan, down to bare metal, with before-and-after grease-depth evidence.

4

Certify

TR19 Grease certificate, grease-depth record and next-due date for your Hindley fire logbook.

Why it matters

Compliance, insurance and fire risk

Three duties push every Hindley operator to keep ductwork clean, and they reinforce one another.

Fire safety law. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for a Hindley premises must assess and manage fire risk. A grease-laden duct is one of the most serious risks in any catering building, because a flare-up on a Ladies Lane cookline can travel the ductwork and spread fire through concealed voids. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the HSE reinforce the same duty of care.

Insurance. A live TR19 Grease certificate is what a Hindley insurer treats as evidence the system is maintained. Miss it and a fire claim may be reduced or refused - an expensive surprise once the damage is done.

Hygiene and environmental health. When Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council carries out a food hygiene inspection it judges the physical state of the premises, and ventilation is part of that. A grease-choked extract can pull down the rating an Environmental Health Officer gives, on top of the odour and the weakening airflow your staff put up with.

How often should kitchen ductwork be cleaned in Hindley?

It is set by cooking hours under TR19 Grease - roughly every three months for heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day, every six for moderate, every twelve for light. A hard-frying Ladies Lane kitchen sits in a tighter band than a daytime Castle Hill Road cafe. We measure the grease load and confirm your interval.

Do you cover the whole of Hindley?

Yes - from Ladies Lane and Castle Hill Road kitchens to the offices, schools and industrial units across Hindley and the wider Greater Manchester.

How much disruption is a duct clean to our service?

Little, if it is planned. We survey the Hindley run first, agree a slot overnight or on a close day, sheet off the kitchen and clean section by section, so a Castle Hill Road cookline is back in service for the next shift.

Do you clean the roof extract fan as well?

Yes. The fan at the top of a Hindley Green or city-centre riser is where grease throws off the blades and the run ends - we degrease it and its housing, because a loaded fan is what finally stops a system pulling.

Do you clean dry and laundry ductwork too?

Yes. We clean the dry ductwork and air-handling in Hindley offices, schools and public buildings, and the lint-heavy laundry ducts in the Greater Manchester hotels and care homes, alongside kitchen grease ducts.

Can you work around our hours?

Yes. We work overnight, early mornings and closing days for the Ladies Lane and Castle Hill Road kitchens, and around shift patterns at commercial and production sites, at no extra charge for out-of-hours work.

Do you clean the full duct run or just the canopy?

The full run, canopy through the concealed horizontal and vertical ductwork to the roof fan - the hidden sections a canopy-only clean leaves loaded, which matters in the tight stock around Ladies Lane and Hindley Green where the runs are long and awkward.

Local knowledge

In and around Hindley

Cotton spinning and hand-loom weaving grew up alongside the pits, and Hindley's first cotton factory was raised in 1785 by Richard Battersby at Lowe Mill, a converted water corn-mill, with weaving shops attached to cottages right across the township. By the 1930s the trade had faded, Lowe Mill closing in 1934, but the mill air of those years hung thick with cotton lint and dust. Modern premises hide their dust and grease inside sealed ductwork instead, where it builds unseen until airflow fails or fire finds a path. We clean and inspect ventilation and extract ductwork across the town, then hand over photographic before-and-after evidence of every run.
