Condensation, damp patches and rust around an extraction system are rarely just untidy. When warm, moisture-laden air from a process is drawn through ducting whose walls are colder than the air, the moisture condenses out onto the duct wall, exactly as a cold glass sweats on a humid day. Where the moisture comes from and what it does

Moist air is generated by all sorts of work: washing and steam, heated processes, plating and other wet chemistry, and any process that liberates water vapour. Draw that air through a metal duct running through a cold bay, an unheated roof void or an external run, and the vapour condenses inside. The water then collects wherever the duct cannot drain it: at the bottom of long horizontal runs, in sagging flexible hose, and at sharp bends, because the system was not built with a fall towards a drain point. A weak or failing fan makes it worse, since slower-moving air lingers in the duct and has more time to cool and condense.

That standing water attacks the system on several fronts. It corrodes metal ductwork from the inside, thinning and perforating it until joints leak and the pull that should reach the hood bleeds away. It mixes with the dust the system is carrying to form a sludge that narrows the bore, raises resistance and drops airflow further, a self-feeding spiral toward blockage that mirrors what happens with a dry duct leak. And persistent damp inside ducting is a breeding ground for mould and microbial growth, which becomes its own air-quality problem every time the system runs.

It usually means one of three things: the duct is uninsulated where it passes through cold spaces, the routing has no fall and no drainage so water cannot escape, or the system is simply the wrong design for a warm, wet process.
