The short answer
In a TR19 Grease verification report, the before-and-after photographs do real work: they are the visual evidence that the concealed parts of the system - the runs and risers you never see - were genuinely cleaned. Because most of a duct clean happens out of sight, a photograph taken from a fixed access point before the clean and again after it is the clearest way to show the change. Taken properly, from identical positions, those images are the difference between a clean you can prove and one you simply have to take on trust.
Why identical positions matter
The standard is not just 'some photos' - it is before-and-after images taken from the same positions. That matters because a photograph from a convenient angle can flatter a system; a matched pair from the same access point, showing the same stretch of duct greasy and then clean, cannot. It removes the ambiguity and lets anyone reading the report see the actual transformation of a specific location, not a general impression.
The photographs sit alongside the numbers. A verification report records deposit measurements from a Deposit Thickness Test or Wet Film Thickness Test confirming the surfaces are below fifty microns, and the images give those readings a face - here is what 'below fifty microns' looks like at this point in the duct. Together, the picture and the measurement make each other credible: the reading proves the standard, the photograph proves the location was reached.
Who relies on the photographs
The people who read these images are not just you. An insurer or loss adjuster assessing a claim, and a fire risk assessor reviewing the premises, both rely on the verification report as evidence the system was cleaned to standard - and the before-and-after photographs are a central part of that evidence. A report with matched images and recorded readings is far harder to dispute than a bare certificate with nothing behind it.
The photographs also build your own record over time. Filed with each clean, they show the state of the system visit after visit, which helps set the right cleaning interval and demonstrates a maintained system if it is ever questioned.
