The practical response before reopening is straightforward but must actually be done. Flush every outlet thoroughly to draw fresh, disinfected water through the system; run the hot water up to temperature, with stored hot water sitting at or above sixty degrees C; and descale and clean taps and spray heads, where scale and biofilm give the bacteria somewhere to hide. Record all of it, because the paperwork is the evidence of due diligence an inspector or an insurer will expect if it is ever questioned.
Legionella is invisible and odourless, which is exactly why it gets overlooked in the rush to reopen. It is the one reopening task that protects lives rather than just ratings, and it belongs at the top of the August list, not the bottom.
More than water
Water is the headline, but a dormant kitchen accumulates a longer list.
